You can say a lot about Huawei, but they do not do anything small. The launch of their latest flagship model, Mate 20, did not disappoint. Thousands of journalists, influencers and partners participated in the launch in London this Tuesday.
In addition to Mate 20, Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 X launched, but in Denmark, not all of the mobiles will be available. In addition to the Mate 20 Lite, Mate 20 Pro comes to Denmark. But we will not get Mate 20 or Mate 20 X in the Danish stores. Therefore, I will only talk about what Mate 20 Pro contains of exciting technologies and news.
New processor
At IFA, Huawei launched their brand new processor, Kirin 980, which is the world’s first 7-nanometer processor. It is the heart of Mate 20 Pro, and it is the one behind most of the magic that the new smartphone can display, especially when it comes to the camera.
First a little about the design. The mobile has a screen of 6.39″ (yes yes, I know it’s a 6.4” screen in practice, but it’s the screen size that Huawei gave us), it’s the same height as an iPhone Xs Max , but somewhat narrower, that’s 72.3mm (I did not get the height, therefore, the comparison with the iPhone Xs Max), and it has a very narrow edge (bezel) of only 2.1mm.
In addition, Huawei obviously likes Samsung, because now they have made a screen that goes around the corner on the side of the screen.
There is no doubt that it gives a more rounded look, but personally, I prefer the slightly more angular look that the old Mate models had – it was a bit more exclusive.
But hey – that’s the trend now, and Huawei follows it.
As always, Huawei gives us a good screen, and the resolution is great, with a resolution of 2290 x 1080.
But it’s not the only secret that the screen hides. For Huawei has placed the fingerprint scanner in the screen itself.
So not there is nothing to find it under the screen, at the back, or on the side of the mobile. Just place your finger on the screen (in a certain area), and then unlock Mate 20 Pro. Nice and easy.
The updated camera
Huawei has, true to habit, also updated the camera. At first glance, I actually thought they had put four lenses in the camera, like we have just seen from Samsung. But no, they have just collected the four lenses and flash in a square on the back of the phone. Whether you like that design or not, is a personal matter – I think it looks elegant.
At the same time, they have lowered the lenses significantly. There is no longer a significant knot on the back of the camera, but a tiny little elevation you see and feel. I appreciate it.
But it does not stop there. Huawei has worked a lot with the camera, and the new processor offers some unique possibilities.
Firstly, there is now an ultra wide angle in the camera and there is a dedicated macro setting on the mobile. And the pictures I saw with macro setting were very impressive. In fact, you can now go as close to 2.5 cm on a subject and still get it sharp.
There is also an AI Cinema Mode on the camera, and it offers some quite unique options. You can, on the fly, blur the background of what you’re shooting, you can keep the subject in color while the rest is in black/white and more.
It offers some completely new possibilities for us who love to film and take pictures, and it’s something that I’m really looking forward to testing a lot more.
If we just look the phone for a moment, it’s equipped with a new face recognition system, where it uses infrared rays to see your face. At the same time, it also makes a 3D Depth scan, making it safer to open the smartphone with face detection – kind of like we know if from Apple’s Face ID.
There were many more exciting features in the mobile, including the new AR lens, where you can, among other things, animate objects you stage in. Then scan your child’s favorite baby, and animate it directly predict the mobile, and simultaneously shoot a video of the one where it dances with your child.
Now the mobile is coming home with me to Denmark, and I’m really looking forward to getting it configured and tested thoroughly.
Below you can see a few pictures I took yesterday. I used, among other things, “paint” and “night” to take pictures, and it’s not just good it’s impressive at taking night shots. It’s almost like taking pictures by daylight.
