Huawei has officially launched their own OS – HarmonyOS

Last Friday it became official. Huawei has an OS ready to compete with Android. However, HarmonyOS will probably be used for IoT devices in the first place

Chinese tech giant, Huawei, has just launched their very own operating system. HarmonyOS is the name of the product that can be used on smartphones, and not least on IoT devices.

HarmonyOS is a micro-kernel OS, in much the same way as Google’s Fuchsia OS (which is still rumored only), and will work on a wide range of devices without compromising security.

But although HarmonyOS may well be an OS on a smartphone, Huawei has also been out saying that there are no plans to replace Android on their smartphones.

To Tech-Test, Ren Ke, Director of Consumer Business, Denmark states that HarmonyOS is primarily designed for IoT products.

“We needed a more robust product for IoT devices, one that could bridge different devices, one OS that could get devices to talk closer together,” says Ren Ke.

“HarmonyOS is not for smartphones, it’s for smart devices. So, when we look three to five years into the future, our OS can become a kind of ‘One Stop Shop’,” says Ren Ke.

He also points out that Huawei’s collaboration with Google is very strong and that they will clearly continue to provide Android for their phones.

“I’m sure Google trusts us and will continue our business.”

The plan is for HarmonyOS to be distributed to many different smart devices, including smart TVs, wearables, smart screens, and smart devices for the car. In fact, we just saw a smart TV launched with HarmonyOS launched, and isn’t that the first step on a long journey?

The plan is for HarmonyOS to be an open OS and ecosystem, and therefore it is planned that HarmonyOS be an Open Source OS in the future.

Initially, HarmonyOS will be launched in China, from there to the rest of the world.
