Since emojis really broke through on the world’s smartphones in the early 10s, the many colorful icons have not looked back – and when an emoji was named the 2015 Dictionary of the Year word, it was clear that emojis could eventually be considered something near a language in itself.
But what appears to be outlandish and comical ways of expressing themselves, then emojis are rapidly changing the way people experience and understand each other. And especially in the workplace, it seems that emojis are more important than you just think.
According to the first issue of Adobe’s Emoji Trend Report, which takes a closer look at 1,000 American emoji users’ behaviors and experiences, no less than 78% of participants respond that appearing more comfortable and likable if using emojis in a work context.
And the positive view does not just stop by being more friendly and open as an employee, colleague or business associate. 63% of the participants say that they seem more credible when using emojis, just as 74% also think it makes feedback appear more sincere.
However, before embarking on throwing emojis right and left at work, it is important to align expectations between emoji sender and recipient, says Imran Afzal, Adobe’s marketing manager.
“Obviously, emojis are gradually playing a big role in how our friends, family, and not least colleagues perceive us, and that they can be used to shape our image positively. But, like so many other ways of expressing themselves, then it is important that the recipient also accepts the way in which emojis are used to communicate. So, in the beginning there may be an advantage in trying out a bit before throwing headlong into the emoji alphabet with the bosses, “says Imran Afzal.
Wherever and how to use emojis to communicate, and if even more fun characters find their way into the workplace, one thing is certain: Emojis will fill more and more in the future, especially as the future generation grows up and coming out into the job market.
Most recently, Adobe has been behind the new, innovative font fonts that allow all emojis to be used in applications such as Adobe Illustrator, -Photoshop and -InDesign.
