Environment and energy consumption by IT is becoming increasingly important to consider,
and at the forthcoming Olympic Games a lot of power will be spent on
technological solutions.
Therefore, it has been decided that all the electricity used at the games in Tokyo in just
two years must come from renewable energy sources to promote focus on reducing
CO2 emissions.
Power from wind and solar cells will not only be used for the place where the games are being
held. The athletes’ homes will also be powered by green electricity.
When the Japanese do something like that, they do not do it halfhearted. To ensure
enough solar energy, it is expected that roads build by solar cells will be
established. Roads covered with solar panels that are durable enough to drive
them with cars.
Used electronics will also play a major role in making the upcoming Olympic Games as
green as possible.
A program has been established to collect old gadgets like smartphones and digital
cameras. The small amounts of precious metals found in them, will be used to
produce about 5,000 medals for the event. The program has so far received
14,636 tonnes of electronic devices, distributed on about 80,000 smartphones
and other devices.
It will also be at these Olympic games that we will see driverless taxis and robot
translators to get ahead of Japan’s lack of taxi drivers and translators.
So, I look forward to a high-tech sporting event that is environmentally friendly and run
entirely on renewable energy. Well yes – and driverless taxis will be sweet. If
they can work in Tokyo, I’m sure they can work in all cities around the world.
